Woman with a Veil by Raphael

Woman with a Veil by Raphael” suggests that the woman shown is married, based on the veil covering her hair, but her actual identity remains unknown. Giorgio Vasari, who observed the painting in the house of the merchant Matteo Botti in Florence, suggested that the artwork might depict Margherita Luti, better known as La Fornarina, a significant figure in Raphael’s life. However, the painting’s gorgeous jewels and attire imply that it could be a commissioned portrait of a young noblewoman.

Executed in a three-quarter view with one shoulder set back—a technique first investigated by Leonardo da Vinci—the portrait generates spatial depth. It accentuates the interaction of light and shadow. The dark background accentuates the young woman’s delicate silk dress’s brightness and the rosy tones of her complexion. While her other arm, stretched in the foreground, highlights the opulent fabric of her sleeve and the subtle light effects on its folds, her right hand over her heart can indicate dedication and love. Under closer examination, the garment becomes the main emphasis of the painting, proving Raphael’s exceptional talent. With her deep, expressive eyes, the woman’s face—which is somewhat depressed and half in shadow—conveys a sense of interior reflection. One gets a generally complex and amazing impression.

Made by Raphael during his 1508 migration from Florence to Rome, this painting epitomizes his portraiture.
